Feeding my son has turned into one of the most confusing things ever. After hunting around the internet and reading hundreds of differing opinions, I'm at a food standstill. I know that you are all going to say "ask your pediatrician," but she just tells me to read the food chart she gave me at one of my first appointments. The food chart is like my version of geometry, a subject in which I failed miserably at.I'm starting to think no one really knows what in the heck to feed their kids and everyone is just winging it. As he is now 8 months old (and still no teeth), do I feed him solid food or still the pulverized-to-almost-liquid baby food?
Oh well, at least he's cute when he eats.

I had this same problem last year. Somedays I felt like I couldn't see the forest for the trees. We did a lot of baby purees, both store bought and homemade. It's SUPER easy to make and then you freeze it in ice cube containers to reheat as needed. You get a little more control over the ingredients and the final texture, too. We would cook rice and mix the puree and rice together, and it usually went down pretty well. :) We did the baby rice certeal too, but I always mixed in a pureed fruit and a dash of cinnamon for flavor.
Another idea would be to just keep trying things, even things you might not think of at first. The first time someone said "broccoli" I nearly scoffed, thinking about the unique flavor that is kind of an "acquired taste". But the person countered with "It's soft, funny looking, and who knows?" So I tried it, and it's still a favorite to this day.
At first it's a little nerve wracking to think about giving whole foods to a human that doesn't have the teeth to grind with, but they are actually pretty adaptable little things, and they have to learn somehow, right? Soft foods like pita bread and ripe pears are easy to gum to deeath.
But my best advice is to talk to other moms you know about where they had luck. You'll get lots of different suggestions, and some of them are bound to work!! Parenthood. It's wonderful, but it can be so disorienting sometimes. I'm sure those of us who have kids have all felt your pain at one point or another. Hang in there and enjoy the ride! :)
I agree with Alison. Try anything soft. Soft cooked veggies and soft fruits. Justus likes Strawberries...he would 'chew' and slobber all over them until they were nothin' but mush. Canned fruit is always easy for little one to eat...just cut up into bite size.
Oh, MD's recommend only trying one new food at a time to screen for allergies. If there is no family history of food allergies, then the little man should be fine. =)
A friend of mine has a little girl (1 of 4 now) that didn't get her first tooth till she was over 1 years old. This little girl could eat corn on the cob! She was serious about her food and it didn't matter that she was toothless. HAHAHA.
So yeah, just try stuff. If he looks interested in what you are eating, then give him an itty bitty little bite/taste. He may surprise you and start knawing on a rib!
PS. YAY for blogging. :P Especially one with your little man's cute face!
XOXOXOXO
